Awesome review of the show! As always you point out moments I’m sure would have gone unnoticed by me. Wish I had been there but this review was the next best thing.❤️
Wish I could have been there in Dublin's fair city to see it with you, Laura! But thanks for setting the scene so well and taking us along for the joyride. And you got a Pogues song--perfect send off!
Great stuff! Love the use of that Heraclitus quote to start this - brilliant. And that Don't Look Back quote of “god, I’m glad I’m not me” - so great.
(Rimbaud's line, "I is another," is apparently a favorite of Dylan's ... feeding into, I hypothesize, him writing "I'm Not There" in '67.)
I listen to available tapes of every show, but don't have as sensitive an ear to note the differences between songs the way you do - thank you for those comparisons.
And now, as another amazing year of Dylan concerts closes, for once I guess we don't have to think to ourselves, "I hope there's a next year," because assuming his health holds out, it looks like there will be.
So glad he's made up his mind to give himself to us.
Hi Noel, thanks for reading and for the kind words! So many roads lead back to that Rimbaud quote — I actually recently spoke it in a podcast episode which you might enjoy, called Dylan the Stranger. It’s on all the podcast platforms in the Definitely Dylan feed. If you liked this review, you might enjoy the podcast.
I think an “idiot” who “begins their Bob Dylan review with ‘a popular aphorism by pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus’" (to quote you, Laura) is a pretty good thinker and writer and should keep doing it. And write some more. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for the kind words! If you haven’t already checked out the Definitely Dylan podcast, you can find more of my writing there. Thanks for reading!
