Jarnow nails the essence of the Never Ending Tour (as well as many of Bob's recordings): "its mission [is] to keep the music alive and always new." As music should be. One of many reasons why I say, There is Bob Dylan, and there is everyone else.
Agreed, and made abundantly clear last night by comparison with Lucinda, Wilco, and Willie. Nothing that these artists did that was *wrong* – just that it’s clear that Bob is up to something completely different than everyone else. I’d add to Jarnow’s truly excellent review that In addition to “USA Blues,” they covered Woody Guthrie’s “California Stars” just before their finale, which of course harkens back to the Mermaid Avenue sessions they did with Billy Bragg in 1998. I couldn’t stop smiling and singing this song.
Exquisite rendition that added to the magic of the evening – seagulls and sea breezes, and Bob in such great voice. Will add another comment to say a bit about Bob and band.
Great report. I'll just add that the Bo Diddley cover was a hit in my section. Aging hippies of all ages could be seen bopping and grooving to Bob's ever so slightly lascivious delivery of that punchline: "I knooooow you don't love me no more..."
"upgrumping" - inspired!
