Also Ray if you get a chance do the April shows of ‘99. Bucky’s last go round. Tremendous. Vienna as ever will always be my favourite ever Dylan concert - ROLLING THROUGH THE STORMY WEATHER.
Thanks for this terrific series, Ray. When you get to the stateside shows at the end of the year, give a close listen to Ann Arbor (Nov 5, 2000), which features G.E. Smith returning to guest on a few songs. Fantastic show.
First of all, thanks to friends reading this article (an incredible piece of work BTW. I would love to know just how many folks were involved in gathering the initial recordings, writing Ray etc)
Please consider a minor yearly contribution. Sixty bucks ain't much. Half a concert ticket FFS!!
That said, I'm embarrassed to say I've only recently become aware of the incredible 2000's, & this article is a real gem. All those shows! I cannot wait to dive into them, play thru them all sir.
Ray thanks again my brother, & remember to bug me directly at my email if my renewal is up & I've had to get a fresh debit card #. Which sure DOES happen on occasion. Sure you know that.
Once again, I am encouraging friends of this website to subscribe, please. It sure helps writers!
And bless the tapers out there BTW. It's a nerve racking experience. I know because my good friend R.D here in KC,Mo did it for literally decades. Sat next to him (not at Dylan shows, sadly) a number of times in the past. My stupid voice is likely on show tapes of his asking dumb stuff.....
My favorite moment in the whole of the series is the lyric change at Munster. It shows up at 2:00 on Track 6 of Disk 1. Never heard it before or since.
Speaking of firing on all cylinders! Yes, Europe 2000 was great. Ray, your work here has ALSO been consistently wonderful. It's perhaps especially good when you are doing deep dives like this latest series. But your other approaches and examinations are just as interesting and entertaining. Keep up the good work!
Ray - Thanks for this - just great. have vague memories from the Evanston Halloween show later that month while the band was still cooking! much appreciated.
I am having trouble downloading 10-6. 10-5 worked fine but 10-6 I get a message that it may be available on amazon and nothing downloads. Any help would be appreciated
Oh I remember that show so well though mainly for the excitement of him speaking. I've never listened to a tape so was never really sure what he said other than what I thought was 'Battle of Britain, Winston Churchhill ... all that jazz' . I'm glad to finally know but it sounded great anyway and the audience had a collective heart attack when he began speaking
Also, I think Crystal Cat are one of the reasons these shows are so revered, aside from how great Bob and the boys were, the sound recordings are right in the sublime pocket.
It was my first Bob tour. I remember seeing the stage lights flash and change colour shifting across the contours of his face as it morphed through all the famous phases/faces of his life. One second it was ‘64, a second later ‘78, ‘75. I also recall being amazed by just how thin and frail he looked. In fact that entire to 2001 period he seemed almost skeletal in form. Yet I’m not sure I ever saw him so physically powerful on stage. He was ducking, bowing, crouching, kneeling, dancing, strutting, almost running at times, lifting up his guitar from around his shoulders like it was nothing but a feather. His voice was sharp and nasal, but still powerful and at times gentle. The band too were as lean and fighting fit as Bob. I always presumed he was in training a lot with his boxing coach Mouse. But maybe it was the post ‘97 physique after a probable year on steroids for the ‘97 histoplasmosis. He was puffy looking in ‘98 and his voice was definitely different in ‘97 to ‘98, closer to his ‘94/5 vocal peak. ‘99 was a special year too, (sometimes I think I prefer it more) like he was on the way up to the peak of 2000.
